Big Castle
The baroque castle, built on bare chalk cliffs (in 1123 first mentioned the existence) gave the town the name. The castle was a residence for the Dukes of Braunschweig. In 1690 a new castle in Baroque style was erected. Around 800 years from this point was the history and development of the town dominated.

Small Castle
Also during the rule a magnificent garden house was built at the foot of the castle in 1725 - called Small Castel. The Small Castle was built as a summer house of the prince. Today you find there a museum with exhibition on the history of the town.

Baroque Garden
A Baroque terraced Garden was laid out according to the French model. It is one of the 10 most beautiful castle gardens in Germany.



Regenstein Ruin
A popular destination for excursions is the Regenstein castle a ruin today. It is a ruin of a medieval counts castel, constructed of sandstone. At foot of that is the Regenstein mill.

Old Town
The historical town center is a special attraction to visitors. The venerable town hall has architectural features from Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance periods.

The Museum of the Lodging House
The historic lodging house of journeymen is located in a half-timbered house built in 1684. Objectives proofs let visitors go back to the surroundings of 100 years ago.

Historic Town Hall
The present building dates back to the 16th century. The vaults and the bricked pointed arch of the door at the back remind us of the previous Gothic building.

St. Bartholomews Church
The core of the Gothic church recalls the previous Romanesque building, a basilica of the 13th century.
